MIRI gives imaging and spectroscopy abilities from the mid-infrared. As the only mid-infrared instrument, astronomers rely on MIRI to review cooler objects like debris disks, which emit most in their light inside the mid-infrared, and very distant galaxies whose light has become shifted in the mid-infrared more than time.
